Celebrations in NZ

Year 3 students have been learning about Celebrations and Festivals this term. Because we all came from different countries, our inquiry was related to celebrations in New Zealand - we wanted to find out more about most important holidays (celebrated in NZ) when we go to our ESOL class. We have learnt a lot of  new words. By learning new words, we can express ourselves better when we write and when we speak. By making posters about Celebrations, we have shown how creative we are.

Every year in term two, Milford School celebrates Literacy and our students are given opportunities to explore it in many different ways. We have visiting authors, literacy quiz, book fair etc. The highlight is always our Book Parade, when the students dress as their favourite book characters. Our ESOL students love dressing up and take part in this event.

Mandarin Language Assistant at Milford School

From March 1, all Milford School students in year 4,5 and 6 classes will have the opportunity to learn Mandarin language. Our new Mandarin Language Assisstant, Liping Xu, has recently come from China and has visited Milford School twice already. On Monday last week Miss Xu has visited and observed all year 4,5 and 6 classes,  and on Wednesday, Miss Xu  spent a whole  day in ESOL Department and was a great helper.
Miss Xu, originally from Suzhou, near Shanghai, has got a degree in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages and has taught Chinese to University students, mostly from the USA.

We hope our students will enjoy learning another language and would like to give a great, big welcome to Miss Liping Xu.

ESOL FLOWER GARDEN

Towards the end of last year, three garden beds were donated to Milford School.  A group of ESOL students, Jason, Terry and Ethan, all in year six classes now, thought it would be great having one in front of  Room 22 and making our school look more beautiful.

So they took on a big job - creating ESOL garden from scratch. The photo below is the result of their hard work. We would like to take this opportunity and thank everyone who has been watering and looking our lovely Geraniums during the school holidays, and has continued to do so since the beginning of the year.
